TITLE: The Jesus Storybook Bible
AUTHOR: Sally-Lloyd Jones (Illustrator: Jago)
AUDIENCE: Children 4+
Many families long for a Bible that is more mature than some children’s Bibles that tell only a handful of Biblical stories in a very infantile way, but more easily comprehended than reading straight through the full Bible verse by verse. We want good transitions that ease children’s understanding from what seem like fairy tales to understandings of how the world works.
The beauty of this “Children’s Version” of the Bible is that it is told as a continuous story whose main plot revolves around Jesus. It puts Jesus as the central figure of many of the Biblical stories that children have heard before; and some that they probably haven’t.
Also worth mentioning is that the storytelling and accompanying artwork is quite good; especially if you like to use character voices and really make the book come alive while you read it.
Any book that my kids ask “just one more!” as we finish each chapter is always a winner. I would recommend this book for children as young as 4 or 5 years old (some small explanations may be necessary).
